Aug 23-Today we woke up in Albuquerque and headed to see the
Petroglyph’s. These are ancient Indian
writings on stone that have been preserved for thousands of years and many
times tell a story and give us clues to how the ancient Indians lived. We hiked about 1 ½ miles to see them. Baxter and Sophie hiked too. The temperatures for this time of year have
only been in the 70’s. We did not see
anything higher than 75 all day and the sun was shining and the rain kept
missing us. Even though we made a few
wrong turns in Albuquerque, we headed out toward the Acoma Pueblo (Sky
City). The drive there was through an
Acoma Pueblo Indian Reservation and OMG, the Views were wonderful. The pictures cannot take it all in. The mountains, plains and then the Sky City
were beautiful. We had the pups so we
could not take the shuttle up but we got some good pictures and we had the best
tacos EVER in the café. We even got Starbucks
coffee! What more can you ask for? Oh,
Kelly saw a snake and backed away (did not run) which was a HUGE deal for her…even
though her heart was racing and she felt nauseated. We met some very nice Acoma Indian folk. One guy had a “gift shop” in the back of his
truck and then at Sky City there were handmade items. We left there and headed to Arizona. In Arizona we went to the Painted Desert and
the Petrified Forest. These views were
OTHER WORLDLY and that was the expression we both used for everything we
saw. We saw the ruins of an ancient
village from 1500 A.D. and then we saw the Petrified wood. This was fascinating as the wood that came
down thousands of years ago (the trees were large enough that there had to be a
forest at one time) and then they turned into rock. We don’t completely understand the background
but it was truly fascinating. We are now
at the hotel on Historic Route 66 in Holbrook Arizona. Tomorrow we hope to see the Meteor Crater and
Two Guns (Meteor Crater is 16 bucks a person and Two Guns doesn't sound so exciting) and then if we are lucky we will be at the Grand Canyon tomorrow :) Oh, BTW, we may be standing on the corner in
Winslow Arizona tomorrow too (for those who know the song).
